Javier Morales (PhD International Relations) is a specialist in Russian foreign and security policy, with a particular focus on its perceptions of the West and relations with the EU, NATO and the United States.
He is a Senior Associate Member of St Antony's College, University of Oxford, where he is affiliated to the Russian and Eurasian Studies Centre. His research is supported by a postdoctoral mobility grant (2010-12) from the Spanish Ministry of Education.
Dr Morales started his academic career at the Department of International Studies, Complutense University of Madrid, where he joined the UNISCI research group in 2002. He later became a Predoctoral Fellow (2004-08) funded by the Ministry of Education. After defending his dissertation, he moved to Carlos III University of Madrid for one year as a Postdoctoral Fellow (2009-10).
He holds a BA/MA in Political Science, a Diploma of Advanced Studies (MPhil) and a PhD in International Relations (cum laude) from Complutense University. He also obtained a MA in Peace, Security and Defence from the IUGM, a joint research institute of the Spanish Open University (UNED) and the Ministry of Defence.
He has been a short-term visiting researcher at the Barcelona Institute for International Studies (IBEI), the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO), the Carnegie Moscow Center and the University of Birmingham. He is a member of the expert panel on security and defence at the Observatory of Spanish Foreign Policy (OPEX), Alternativas Foundation.
Javier Morales Hernández es Doctor en Relaciones Internacionales y especialista en la política exterior y de seguridad de Rusia, con especial atención a sus percepciones de Occidente y sus relaciones con la UE, la OTAN y EE.UU.
Es Miembro Asociado Senior de St. Antony's College, Universidad de Oxford, donde está adscrito al Centro de Estudios Rusos y Eurasiáticos. Su investigación está financiada por un contrato del subprograma de Estancias de Movilidad Postdoctoral, Ministerio de Educación (2010-2012).
Comenzó su carrera académica en el Departamento de Estudios Internacionales de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid, donde se incorporó al grupo de investigación UNISCI en 2002. Más tarde consiguió una beca de investigación predoctoral (2004-2006), transformada luego en un contrato de Investigador en Formación (2006-2008), ambos financiados por el programa FPU del Ministerio de Educación. Tras defender su tesis, trabajó durante un año en la Universidad Carlos III de Madrid como Investigador Postdoctoral (2009-2010).
Es Licenciado en Ciencias Políticas y de la Administración (especialidad de Estudios Internacionales), Diploma de Estudios Avanzados y Doctor en Ciencias Políticas (Relaciones Internacionales) con sobresaliente cum laude por la Universidad Complutense. Cuenta también con un Máster en Paz, Seguridad y Defensa por el Instituto Universitario "General Gutiérrez Mellado" de la UNED.
Ha realizado estancias breves de investigación en el Institut Barcelona d'Estudis Internacionals (IBEI), el Instituto Estatal de Relaciones Internacionales de Moscú (MGIMO), el Carnegie Moscow Center y la Universidad de Birmingham. Pertenece al panel de expertos en seguridad y defensa del Observatorio de Política Exterior Española (OPEX), Fundación Alternativas.
